Retired 9/11 responder in central Pennsylvania hopes to return to travel, swimming and choir

Lee Poje knows of a young woman who got a kidney from a stranger after someone held up a sign at a hockey game.

If only that could happen more often.

Poje, of Lititz, Pa., is a retired New York City police sergeant.

For six months following the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center, he worked 12 hours a day, six days a week identifying bodies and notifying families. Within a year, he was diagnosed with a heart condition that forced him to retire. Soon after that, he was told he had kidney disease and would someday need dialysis.
