Poje, of Lititz, Pa., is a retired New York City police sergeant.
For six months following the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center, he worked 12 hours a day, six days a week identifying bodies and notifying families. Within a year, he was diagnosed with a heart condition that forced him to retire. Soon after that, he was told he had kidney disease and would someday need dialysis.
