Joseph Schreder

This quilt patch is dedicated to Joe Schreder, loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. The flag displayed here represents Joe’s deep love of his country. He served in the Army as a young man and had great respect for the American flag.

Joe also loved his family, and happily spent a lot of time with his grandchildren in Pennsylvania and North Carolina, known to them as “Pappy.”

Always a hard worker, he operated the Glass Kitchen restaurant in Lancaster, PA for twenty years until illness struck. Joe had to have his leg amputated, which in turn forced him to sell his restaurant, and marked a major redirection of Joe’s life.

With the help of an amputee Support Group, Joe took up hand cycling; at first it meant a new way to get some exercise, but hand cycling quickly became a huge passion for Joe, and he logged over 20,000 miles on his cycles.

Another one of Joe’s passions was his beloved Boston Red Sox! He was a fan since high school, and stayed with them through the worst of times and the best of times! The picture of him in his Boston Red Sox hat was taken in a pub in Ireland; Joe also liked pubs and the conversations he would always strike up with fellow patrons there.

Joe would be extremely proud that he has helped someone else to see with his donor Gift of Life, and his family has great satisfaction knowing that a part of him is still living through someone else.
