Vicki had decided if anything ever happened to her she would like to be an organ donor. She indicated this on her driver’s license so we knew her wishes. You think that it is a great idea to help someone else but you never truly understand what her decision would mean until something happens. We found out one afternoon after she had an unexpected and tragic fall. Vicki’s life was shorter than any of us could have imagined, but was filled with love for her family, her friends and her faith.
When we were invited to participate in the Threads of Love memory quilt some special memories came to mind. The background material reminds us how much love she had for her feline friends. She supported the humane society and rescued and found homes for stray cats, who found their way to her doorstep. Vicki cared and shared her home with five cats over the years.
The embroidered flower on the white square comes from a pillow case, handmade by Aunt Ruth. She was an elderly family acquaintance who required some part time help so she could remain in her home. Vicki brought out Ruth’s playful side. A special relationship developed between the two of them. She cared for her for seven years until Ruth passed away in February 2015 at the age of 93.
Vicki’s favorite place to vacation was the seashore. This is symbolized by the handmade seashell angel pin on the red heart. She loved watching the sunrise and set, swimming in the ocean and relaxing on the beach.
We continue to miss Vicki every day. We like to think she is now watching over us and trust we will see her again in heaven someday. Cherishing our memories, we hope her decision to be a donor has truly helped others and their family’s lives in a positive way.
