John Michael O'Brien

John Michael O’Brien, my husband of 35 years was my best friend! He was the kindest, sincerest and most giving person in my life.

I chose this fabric for it’s truest meaning, that he was an Irishman as ever there would be. With a name like “O’Brien,” tale be told, John always enjoyed a pint or two, and celebrated St. Patrick’s Day faithfully each year with family and close friends. He took pleasure in cooking every day, but preparing the annual St. Patrick’s Day meal was among his signature creations.

John was dedicated to and adored his family, consisting of 2 daughters, their husbands, and his 4 grandchildren. He was proud that the luck of the Irish blessed him with a granddaughter born on St. Patrick’s Day!

John was passionate about life, and together with his life, he traveled to Italy, Ireland, Poland, Alaska, Mexico and throughout the United States. He had a passion for football, as he was a shareholder of the Green Bay Packers. John had a spiritual side, enjoying the solace of this backyard garden, that was a habitat for butterflies, hummingbirds, gold finches and others of God’s creatures.

The picture represented in our quilt square was one taken during a visit to John’s homestate of Wisconsin, just 3 weeks before his sudden passing. It almost appears that the heavens were smiling proudly on him in his nephew’s vineyard. As a career photographer, John had a wonderful eye for capturing so many memories on film. This picture, shown with his newest camera around his neck, is truly a trademark shot.

John was a wonderful man who touched numerous lives, far and near. He maintained the most positive outlook on life and had an amazing perspective. He truly was a servant of God.
