We believe Carl’s life could be best described as follows. Carl believed that life should be lived to its fullest and quality of life is essential. He had two loves in his life: his family and the fire service. He dedicated 40 years of his life to the fire service. Most of those years were spent at Aleif Dept. in Texas as depicted by the patch on the quilt square. He also ran with the EMS and helped raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy. Carl also loved traveling, bowling, golfing and dancing.
In January 2000, while working he was in an auto accident. This accident forever changed his life and as a result he spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair. He lost his ability to bowl, golf and dance, however he did not lose his lust for life. He continued to travel and he became involved with the Lampeter Fire Dept in Lancaster, PA. He was unable to fight fires but was an important part of the department as president.
After the accident and due to health problems, quality of life was very important to him. He believed that quality of life was important in this life and when that was lost, it was time to move on to the next life. Being an organ donor was very important to him because he felt that it would be one last way to try to help someone have a better life by improving their “quality of life.”
Our family would like to thank the Gift of Life Donor Program for allowing his final wish to come true.
