George R. Gelles

George R. Gelles

February 12, 1942 – October 10, 2019

Our beloved husband, Dad and Grandpap, George Gelles, lived a life of significance in service to others. It is comforting to know that even in death he was able to leave a legacy of love as a tissue and bone donor through the Gift of Life Program.

A graduate of Mount St. Mary’s University, George went on to enjoy a long career at the Mount where he served in several professional roles including Dean of Students and Director of Auxiliary Services. Even in retirement, his service continued in various elected positions with the National Alumni Council, with St. Francis Xavier Parish, Gettysburg; as a board member of several non-profit organizations, and as an on-site coordinator for student travel with World Strides. He loved to help make an event or gathering run smoothly and will be remembered as someone who brought smiles and happiness to everyone he met.

The pink fabric in the quilt patch is from the T-shirt he was wearing in the last photo of him, taken a month before his death. The navy blue fabric is from the favorite Gaelic shirt he was wearing the day he suffered a cardiac arrest, October 7, 2019.

His photo here is the one we chose for his funeral prayer card. The verse on the card reads: “Grieve not…nor speak of me with tears… but talk of me as though I were with you still. I loved you so… ’Twas Heaven here with you.”

Until we meet again, we love and miss you, George!
